It can be any length. You just need to use hairspray and tease your hair with a comb.

Your hair doesn't have to be too long to wear this hairstyle, it works with pretty much any length as long as you can pull the middle section back!
When your hair's wet, use either a root-pump spray or mousse (I like Matrix Vavoom Root Riser). Spray it onto your roots section by section, rubbing it in each time. Then blow dry your hair upside down and it will be huge! From there, you can take a section of hair at the front of your head and flip it forward onto your face. Take the hair underneath and backcomb it, then hairspray it so it stays. (I know this sounds scary, but if you have straight hair it won't be hard to get out after.) Take the section of hair that's flipped forward, and pull it back over the "hump." Use a ton of bobby pins to hold it in place and finish with hairspray!
It should stay for as long as you want it to!
